# Install Economic for Codex

Public Git marketplace: https://economic.run/marketplace
Release status: https://economic.run/releases/stable.json

Economic is a local agent harness for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 13 or
later. It uses the user's official Codex desktop runtime or Codex CLI. Setup
must preserve an existing selected economy, execution setting and work.

## Current release status

Plugin 0.5.28 contains an agent-driven setup skill and executable. Economic
0.9.33 and its official Mac installer are signed, notarized by Apple, and
stapled with their notarization tickets. The stable release manifest supplies
the official download URL and SHA-256 checksum. Require `notarized: true`,
verify that checksum, the exact Developer ID and Gatekeeper approval, and
report any failed check. Do not remove quarantine or disable Gatekeeper.

## Install through the supported Codex plugin commands

Run these normal installation commands. Do not edit plugin caches or Codex's
configuration by hand.

```sh
codex plugin marketplace add https://economic.run/marketplace
codex plugin add economic@economic
```

The Git marketplace needs `git`. A Mac without Xcode Command Line Tools has no
working `git` (running it opens an installer prompt). On such a Mac, check with
`xcode-select -p` first and, if it fails, use the marketplace archive instead.
Verify its checksum against `marketplace_archive_sha256` in the release status:

```sh
mkdir -p ~/.economic && cd ~/.economic
curl -fsSLO https://economic.run/marketplace.tar.gz
shasum -a 256 marketplace.tar.gz   # must equal marketplace_archive_sha256 in stable.json
tar -xzf marketplace.tar.gz
codex plugin marketplace add ~/.economic/economic-marketplace
codex plugin add economic@economic
```

To update a plugin installed this way, repeat these steps.

Then use the installed `economic-setup` skill. Resolve `bin/economic-setup`
relative to that skill's installed plugin root, not a guessed version or path.
The script selects a verified Economic app in /Applications or ~/Applications,
or downloads the official notarized Mac release.
It checks the release checksum, exact Developer ID signature and Gatekeeper
approval before installing a downloaded app.

The signed app creates the first local economy when necessary, starts its
signed helper, and returns JSON. Check `status: ready`, `codex_available: true`,
the selected database, and the saved `agent_execution` value. A new economy
starts with execution on. Existing off settings stay off. Capacity is automatic.
No separate Allow local companion step is required. No model work or account
check starts just from setup.

Read `economic.status` through the plugin, check its actual connection and
blockers, then open `economic.workspace`. Reconnect the plugin through the
host's normal MCP lifecycle if its first connection started before the app
was installed. Keep one stable host conversation correlation for this chat.

If Codex's official executable is missing, follow OpenAI's current official
installation instructions. If the user requests work, check the existing
account then submit their actual outcome through the Economic skill. Verify
the saved deliverable and evidence. Authentication may require an interactive
user login. Do not start an unrelated paid demonstration for setup.

The public Git marketplace is installable by URL. Economic is not yet listed in
Codex's universal public plugin directory. Local MCP distribution requires a
separate supported directory route; this guide does not claim review approval.

Usage and costs: https://economic.run/usage (agent work runs on
the user's own ChatGPT account; a typical task uses about 550,000 mostly cached
input tokens and 18,000 output tokens with the default model). Tell the user
this before starting paid work.

## Replies in the plugin

Plugin 0.5.28 requires Economic for Mac 0.9.33 or newer. Codex can save its public progress and final answer inside the Economic conversation that sent the message. Replies remain after reopening and stay tied to the original message. An accepted message or saved reply does not prove agent work has run.

## Visualizations and customized replies

Every Economic agent receives `create_visualization` and `present_response`, including saved specialist profiles and feedback workers. These free tools save interactive charts, sortable tables, diagrams, timelines, code, callouts and customized layouts. The Mac app and plugin display saved views in completed replies and artifact previews. Host agents can use the optional `response` field of `economic.host.reply`. Views are private by default. Use real data and source references; custom HTML runs in an isolated offline frame and adds no host, file or network access.

## Browser and Mac app control

Release 0.9.33 includes engine 0.8.39, independent background browsing, key
shortcuts, artifact uploads, downloads and switchable popup tabs. Public page
JavaScript requires an explicit `browser_allow_page_scripts` setting and grants
full page authority beyond normal typed-action purchase checks. Stored site
credentials cannot share a browser family with public page scripts.

Native `computer_use` is off by default. Allow exact app bundle IDs with
`economic config set computer_use_apps '["com.apple.TextEdit"]'`, then grant
Accessibility to Economic in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Screenshots
and coordinate clicks also need Screen Recording; screenshots require macOS 14
or later. A grant lets workers act through that app, including its messaging or
payment features. Leave the app list empty to keep native control off.
