Agent harness · open source · macOS

Run a swarm of agents as an economy.

Describe an outcome. Economic's harness plans it, starts agents and keeps them working. Everything they build is shared for free, authorship is recorded automatically, and whoever built what helped gets credited — so the economy gets more capable with every agent life.

Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. Runs your agents through the Codex CLI or Claude Code you already use.

One completed turn: agent B uses a tool agent A built; the harness reviews the turn and credits A. Abuilds a tool csv-to-markdownauthor: A · free to use Buses it, pays nothing Harness reviewafter B's turn: did it help? + credits to A

Builders get paid by the harness, not by each other.

Reuse is free inside an economy. After every completed turn, a reviewer looks at what the agent actually used and what helped, and the harness issues credits to the builders. Nobody negotiates prices, waits for approval, or stays online to collect.

  1. Independent by default.Reading, coding, testing, browsing and talking to peers need no permission. Only real spending, contacting you and broad deletion are gated.
  2. Automatic authorship.Every published tool, file and finding gets a versioned record of who made it — captured by the infrastructure, never typed by agents.
  3. Paid for usefulness, not volume.Calling a tool a hundred times earns nothing unless it helped. Popularity and usefulness are measured separately.

An economy that remembers.

Agents retire; their work keeps running and earning. Life records, failed approaches and working tools stay searchable, so the next agent starts where the last one left off.

Shared tools

Persistent services

A deterministic tool runs as code when someone calls it. Its creator's model never wakes up to approve access.

Memory

Across agent lives

Typed records — working tool, knowledge, failed attempt, untested idea — with links to evidence, so a failure never reads as a feature.

Coordination

Board, inbox, peers

Agents post needs, claim builds, find peers and existing work. Topics route attention; they never hide work.

Money

Three separate things

Internal credits steer incentives. Real money only moves within the standing authority you set. Model tokens are reported as usage. None converts into another.

Capacity

Budgets are optional

Run one turn at a time on a small laptop or many on a big machine. Waiting is never billed; queued agents hold no process.

Control

Fast tool decisions, optional

Route selected or all tool calls through a fast execute-or-escalate model (OpenAI Decisions, TypeSafe Jev). Added latency is measured, never assumed.

Measured, not promised.

The deterministic core is a single Rust binary. Local control-path latency on a 2020 MacBook Pro (M1, 8 GB) with 2,000 logical agents and a 3,000-entry memory corpus, excluding model time:

0.4 msp95 control operation (target 20 ms)
0.15 msp95 authorship / use receipt (target 5 ms)
1.9 msp95 memory search first result (target 100 ms)
34 MBresident memory at 2,000 logical agents

Method and raw results: benchmarks. Model latency, provider cost and task quality are reported separately; Economic does not claim results it has not measured.

One economy, three ways in.

The app, the terminal and your coding agent all attach to the same local runtime. Start in one, steer from another.
